From Waste to Value: UMBEL`s Dr. Bañares to Spotlight Synthetic Biology Innovations at 9th BIOTECH Talks on Circular Bioeconomy
The University of the Philippines Los Baños – Accelerating Growth Through One Research and Extension in Action (UPLB-AGORA) will host the 9th BIOTECH Talks on June 30, 2026, featuring a compelling discourse on cutting-edge biotechnology and sustainability titled “From Waste to Value: Synthetic Biology Approaches for a Circular Bioeconomy.” The upcoming session will feature Dr. Angelo Banares of the University of Mindanao Biomolecular Engineering Laboratory (UMBEL) as the invited speaker, who is expected to present innovative perspectives on how synthetic biology can transform waste streams into high-value biological products, contributing to the advancement of a circular bioeconomy framework.
The lecture will explore how engineered biological systems can be harnessed to convert agricultural and industrial waste into useful compounds, thereby reducing environmental burden while simultaneously generating economic value. This approach aligns with global sustainability efforts that promote resource efficiency, waste minimization, and the development of green biotechnological solutions.
As part of the BIOTECH Talks series, the event serves as a platform for knowledge exchange among researchers, students, and industry practitioners, fostering dialogue on emerging biotechnologies and their applications in addressing pressing environmental and economic challenges. The participation of Dr. Banares highlights the growing contribution of the University of Mindanao in the field of synthetic biology and bioengineering, particularly in developing innovative solutions that bridge fundamental research and real-world applications. His talk is expected to underscore the role of interdisciplinary science in advancing sustainable development and strengthening the bioeconomy landscape in the Philippines.
Organized by UPLB-AGORA, the BIOTECH Talks initiative continues to promote scientific collaboration and capacity-building by bringing together experts from various institutions to share advancements in biotechnology research and its practical implications for society.
The 9th installment of BIOTECH Talks is anticipated to further enrich discussions on how science and innovation can drive circular economy models, positioning biotechnology as a key enabler of sustainable development and environmental stewardship.
